Structure Innovation

Two separate questions and they each need at least two scholarly sources. 

1. If you have the product that you are trying to find innovation for, how do you get the random link? Do you write down a bunch of random words or other products that someone randomly picks out of a hat or is there a way to select that?

2. Can we structure innovation? Or is innovation the creation of ideas where techniques like brainstorming are very effective and adding structure to innovation could in fact harm the process?
