Future of Nursing: Importance of Nursing Education

According to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Future of Nursing Report, by 2020, 80 percent of nurses should have a Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) degree. According to Maughan, Bobo, Butler, and Schantz (2016), a BSN degree improves one’s knowledge and skills in providing quality patient care, resulting in improved health outcomes such as lower readmission rates and failure-to-rescue readmission rates, and so on. This paper will discuss my options as an undergraduate in the nursing job market, personal certification and advancement degrees, how educational levels affect my job market competitiveness, my role in the future of nursing, and my personal views on whether continuing education (CE) should be mandatory.

My Options in the Job Market

BSN education provides me with a plethora of job opportunities. A specialist RN in any field is one of these (e.g., surgical nurse, pediatric nurse, hospice nurse, obstetric and gynecological nurse, ICU nurse, etc.). I could also become a nurse manager, whose duties and responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the patient care unit. In addition, the nurse anesthetist position, which involves dealing with patients undergoing surgical procedures, would be an option for me. With a BSN, I could also work as a labor and delivery nurse, caring for women during their prenatal, childbirth, and post-natal periods. In addition, BSN nurses can work as educators.
